Qualcomm has created the Qualcomm® Design in India Challenge in collaboration with The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM). This initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision to bring about a paradigm shift from a services-driven model to a manufacturing model for indigenous products that will cater to the needs of India and the rest of the world. The goal is to catalyze creation of a product and hardware design ecosystem in India in the domains of smartphones, tablets and Internet of Everything (IoT) products for Healthcare, Education, Banking, Automotive, Wearables and Smartcities.
The Qualcomm Design in India Challenge was first announced on December 1, 2015 with an aim to scale India to a design hub by leveraging India’s vast pool of engineering talent. We are now ushering into the second phase of the challenge with the announcement of our Top 10 shortlists that will receive $10,000 each and will now proceed to the prototyping phase. From the shortlists, up to three winners will be chosen to receive up to $100,000 each as recognition and encouragement for future efforts.

Farm Robotics, for mechanizing peak labour demanding tasks in farming, focused on Indian farm conditions. The machine being developed is compact and intelligent, with 3D vision based solution for detecting objects primarily aimed at harvesting (picking), scouting and other agricultural operations.
An intelligent quad rotor drone capable of executing autonomous flights in GPS denied environment using vision based navigation techniques. The drone would be offered to researchers and developers worldwide to execute their own ideas/algorithms.
Ark Robot is a 3 DOF industrial robot, driven by motors and 2 axis arms with grippers. It can move inventories within a known environment as quickly as a human worker but when combined with data analytics and computing, delivers unprecedented efficiency.

Carnot is an IOT device that connects the car/bike to user's phone and lets him/her monitor the safety of their vehicle - get alerts if towed or stolen, get instant alerts to emergency contacts in case of an accident and measure mileage.
High Performance Computing
Treepie offers a product that contains a low cost high performance cluster of Qualcomm Krait based boards to perform HPC with high MHz/W ratio. The cluster will be useful for IoT based applications, video game developers, academicians and students who want to build their own distributed parallel computing applications at a very low cost.
The blimp consists of a lightweight envelope filled with helium and equipped with a dynamic buoyancy control system to provide variable upward thrust and the octocopter provides the capability to move in space with 6 degrees of freedom.
From all submissions, ten shortlists have been chosen to receive up to $10,000 each in funding to proceed to the prototyping phase for their product ideas, and will now get access to the Qualcomm® Innovation Lab. From these shortlists, upto three winners will be chosen to receive up to $100,000 each as recognition and encouragement for future efforts.

Sachin has over 23 years of industry experience. He started his career as a consultant with Capgemini Ernst & Young and led their insurance software strategy with Progressive Insurance. Subsequently, he served in various engineering and network design roles at LCC and Ericsson, and led the launch of Ericsson’s west coast networks with Cricket Wireless. Sachin joined Qualcomm in 1996 and has since served in various leadership roles in engineering, product management, strategy, and business development.

He is head of Qualcomm Research India and also leads the modem and multi-media systems engineering teams for product development at Qualcomm India. Dhananjay joined Qualcomm Inc. in 2003 in the Corporate Research and Development group in San Diego. He was a key contributor to the design and development of mobile broadband; OFDMA based wide area networks (UMB – 3GPP2 RevC) – a pre-cursor to the 4G LTE standard. He has led project-engineering efforts for 3G smart repeaters and modem development.

KS Viswanathan has around 30 years of general management and leadership experience with a strong customer capital. In the last three years, he has been associated with the establishment of Azim Premji University and MSD Welcome Trust Hilleman Laboratories.
Shashi Reddy has 25+ years of experience in Wireless and Embedded software industry and has worked in companies like Qualcomm, Skyworks, Northern Telecom, Sony, Intel in US and India. He is currently heading Qualcomm Hyderabad Design center in development of embedded wireless products.
The Qualcomm® Innovation Lab is a unique, state-of-the-art incubation center. It contains all the necessary tools and equipment to enable companies participating in the Challenge to design, layout, calibrate and bring up rapid prototyping and innovative product designs. Participants will receive different kinds of evaluation kits and development boards, along with the tools to optimize different functionalities of their products, such as connectivity, camera, audio and display. The Lab will also be fully equipped with support engineers to offer guidance and direction in product and design to the companies using it.
In addition to test, calibration and optimization tools, Challenge participants will have access to a variety of DragonBoard™ development kits for different Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ platforms. Mobile development platforms, single board computers and IoT Kits will also be available to participants, depending on the product being developed. Software development kits (SDKs) such as the AllJoyn® framework, Qualcomm® AllPlay™ smart media platform, Vuforia SDK etc. will be made available.
